In independent schools, marketing and communications professionals often become the default solution for anything involving creativity, promotion, or technology. Need a flyer? Ask marketing. An event photographed? Call the creative team. A last-minute presentation, social graphic, or video? You know where to go.
Our desire to serve is one of our greatest strengths, but it can also become a significant weakness. When everything becomes a priority, the work most closely aligned with our school’s mission can suffer. We become so focused on fulfilling requests that we lose the opportunity to think strategically, create intentionally, and produce our very best work.
Serving our schools well doesn’t mean saying yes to everything. Sometimes it means having difficult conversations, establishing clear processes, and helping colleagues understand the difference between urgent requests and meaningful priorities. The goal isn’t to do more work. It’s to do the work that matters most—and do it exceptionally well.
