Are We Telling Stories or Just Sharing Information?

The difference between communicating what happens at our schools and communicating why it matters.

Independent schools are full of stories worth telling. Every day, students discover new passions, teachers invest in young lives, athletes learn perseverance, and communities come together around a shared mission. Yet, in the rush to fill content calendars, update websites, and promote upcoming events, we can unintentionally reduce these meaningful experiences to simple announcements.

There’s an important distinction between sharing information and telling a story. Information tells us that a student won an award. A story helps us understand the teacher who encouraged that student, the obstacles they overcame, and how the experience reflects the school’s mission. Both have value, but only one has the power to create a lasting emotional connection.

As school communicators, our greatest opportunity isn’t simply to document what happens on campus. It’s to reveal the deeper purpose behind it. What if we approached every assignment, photograph, video, and social media post with one question: What does this moment reveal about who we are as a school?
